The School of Automobile and Traffic Engineering was founded in 2008 by merging the department of transportation of the former College of Urban Construction and the department of vehicle engineering of the College of Machinery and Automation. The history of the school originated from the two majors of automobile maintenance and construction machinery in 1965. After decades of inheritance and development, it has formed its own unique discipline advantages and, with good software and hardware environment and strong academic atmosphere. It is one of the most potential colleges in WUST.

There are 55 full-time teachers, including 10 professors, 25 associate professors and senior engineers, 6 doctoral supervisors, 45 master supervisors and 43 teachers with doctoral degrees. There are two persons who were awarded the title of Chutian Scholar (Student) in Hubei Province, and two was awarded Wuhan Talents, 1 was awarded Qingshan Talents and 1 was awarded Taishan Industry Leader in Shandong Province.

At present, the school offers three undergraduate majors, namely, traffic engineering, logistics engineering and vehicle engineering, and has a doctoral degree authorization point in vehicle engineering, a master's degree authorization point in transportation and two master's degree categories: machinery and transportation. Logistics engineering and vehicle engineering have been approved as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and traffic engineering and vehicle engineering have passed the professional certification of engineering education.

The school has two provincial platforms of Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center for Advanced Automotive Parts Technology and Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center for Automotive Energy-saving Technology, two municipal platforms of Wuhan School-Enterprise Joint Innovation Center for Automotive Steering System and Intelligence and Pilot Base for Automotive Intelligent Sensors, as well as Intelligent Vehicle Engineering Research Institute and Power Plant Technology Research Center. The school has formed research characteristics in the fields of intelligent vehicle chassis and driverless driving, digitalization of transportation vehicle and vibration and noise control, decision-making optimization of intelligent logistics and transportation systems, intelligent constructing and maintenance of transportation infrastructure, and planning and control of intelligent connected transportation systems.

The school pays attention to the quality of personnel training, focusing on training professionals with solid foundation, strong practical ability, hard work and innovative spirit in automobile, transportation and logistics. The students have won many awards in high-level competitions such as Challenge Cup. They have won 111 awards at provincial and ministerial level and above in the past three years, published more than 20 papers, and applied for more than 80 patents and software copyrights. Chiji Racing Team, founded in 2013, has grown into a racing team with four racing cars, namely, fuel racing car, Baha racing car, electric racing car and driverless car, which is a bright business card for students scientific and technological innovation. The Automobile Culture Festival, founded in 2009, highlights the characteristics of school-enterprise cooperation, wide participation and great influence of campus culture, and has become an effective platform for students to exercise their abilities and improve their quality.
